The "fix" in the thread is just not updating ever again.

There is no fix that can be suggested in that thread. Pi LTD doesn't have the modified RAM Pis to test their firmware against nor should they be required to support modified hardware.

The fix is turning the detection of the modified ram from a boot failure into a warning and log output, then tell users asking for support that they don't have support for Pis that were modified by third parties.

Instead we get restrictions on all users because some users buy stuff from random marketplaces online?

I was thinking maybe reverse engineering newer Apple Silicon devices to port Linux.

Fable was able to get Linux booting on my M4 Pro mini. (Using Asahi as a base, not possible to upstream because they really don't like AI). Hardware support beyond USB 2.0 requires tracing macOS under the hypervisor, which Fable refuses to do and Opus isn't much good at. I'll try Sol at some point.

You don't have to upstream it, but if you stuck it in GitHub or whatever so everybody else could pick up the source code changes, that'd be neat.

Off topic, but only a couple of years ago the 3d printer community re-discovered these same kinds of flaws in the extruder gears that result in visible ripples in prints. When you put a gear on a stepper motor, and set it with a set screw, you’re pretty much always off center slightly.

The US only just approved a new one for broad spectrum UV protection. That distinction has largely been a US only issue.

It’s useful for a while. Hardware has a pretty short useful lifespan. I’ll be curious how the landscape will look in 10 years as it comes time to replace all of these servers. Maybe we’ll extend the lifespan, or usage will continue to grow, or we start shutting down datacenters.

Paper statements are now opt-in most places, so most people won’t have local copies of the records anymore. It’s extremely important, because there is no duty for a company to provide historic data. None of my banks provide detailed data back more than a couple of years.

That is a good point and at the very least it’s a good idea to download electronic statements, maybe with a script to retain the most recent n statements

Many banks don’t even provide bank books anymore.

The only physical thing I’ve got from my bank is an ATM card.

That requires them to either travel to a country that recognizes war crimes and be arrested, or a country deciding to go in and get them. I can’t imagine anyone would have the political will and means to invade. It seems extremely unlikely there would ever be an arrest.
