Just as a point of contention. Its hard to find an EV that is only gonna pull 1000w using the heater.

My EV doesn't have a heatpump and the resistive heating pulls up to 8KW warming up the cabin on a cold day.

I keep a 12v heated blanket around to save power. (no heated seats/steering wheel)

Heated seats are where the real power savings come in.

Those are aftermarket products for use in heavy vehicles, not something that's present (or usable) in passenger cars.

They are pretty common in passenger cars too, google 'standheizung' or 'stationary heater' and you'll find a ton of them. You might not realize that that is what it is. On cars sold in the Nordics and some German brands it is just a checkbox during the order process.

It's quite normal in colder climates, but mostly in Diesel cars. I had it in my VW Multivan. I've never heard of anyone installing Webasto in their EV.

You need something to vacuum seal the food. Is that included in the $30?

That can be just a ziplock bag and the same water bath you're going to use for the sous vide anyway.

you really don't for most things. Ziplock is fine for things that take an hour or two.

Salamander broiler would be incredible to have at home. We get decent results from using a cast iron pan thats as hot as we can get it. At most we can sear 2 steaks as it tends to cool off pretty quick even under high heat. Got any better alternatives that a home cook could use?

I've tried a blowtorch and a barbecue, but they're not as good as cast iron. Best results from just spending $15 on a second cast iron.

Are you just heating the bare cast iron to crazy hot temperatures and then putting the steak in?

I've thought about trying that, but I'd need to first strip the seasoning off the pan to avoid all kinds of nasty flavors. The second pan makes sense...

I heat it bare, then seconds before I put the steak in I pour some peanut oil, which immediately begins smoking.

Reverse sear over sous vide -- moisture is the enemy of crust.

Cheap knock off a Big Green Egg with hardwood charcoal can get to 650°F or so pretty quick, and does an amazing job of finishing up after a reverse sear.

A blow torch might be worth trying. I'd think it's still not as good as a hot broiler because it's heating a relatively small area.

As noted in an earlier comment of mine, I have one (actually made for burning weeds) connected to my gas grill tank, and a fancy Japanese one inside. They're honestly pretty rinky-dink. What they are good at is transferring heat just to the crust. But they only do a small patch at a time, and you have to hover for far longer than you'd think. Like, you do a little patch, leave the torch there for 30 seconds, move on. They just don't pump enough energy into the crust fast enough for them to be a general solution. I use them for touching things up, or crisping up a bit.

You tried an actual hardware blowtorch. Thats never failed me, though these days I just finish on a ripping hot stainless steel skillet.

I feel like I am better off with cast iron or stainless steel compared to slightly bigger torch. Stainless steel allowing some deglazing for sauce. Torch is still too small area and burns more so sears.

Automatic litter box is a great example. We've had one for ~7 years and it's still going strong. High initial cost that pays back every day over the course of what will likely be a decade+ of usage. Absolutely worth every penny if you look to the horizon. I imagine the robot mowers and robot house maids will fall under the same type of payback but with even higher upfront costs - perhaps this will turn into yet another subscription scheme.

Not OP, but I have a litter robot 3 that is still going strong after 10 years, and a litter robot 4 that is around four years old. The only problem I've run into is occasionally the pinch sensor will get bits of litter stuck in it and I have to take the globe off and tap/push on the sensor housing, then it will allow cycling again.

Yeah, I've always had two or three cats using them, they like to use them as an opportunity to hide and pounce on one another as one exits the litter robot globe, inside the globe they have a pretty limited field of view.
