> So I don’t know where that massive insecurity is coming from.

The biggest racket that the major car companies ever pulled was tying someones identity to the car they drove.

What a strange comment. Of course your car isn't casually related to who you are, but it is definitely correlated - it can't not be!

I get the sense that a lot of auto marketers are chasing after a causal "you buy the car" -> "you become [x]."

It doesn't work on most, but it definitely works on some. Look at any forum for a particular car and you'll find em.

I mean, that's advertising in general. What does Dos Equis have to do with living an interesting life?

eg: Subaru commercials

Years ago my dad was shopping around for a used car and was looking at a Cadillac sedan on a lot. The salesman knew him and came out and told dad that he couldn't afford a Cadillac. Dad told him that a $6000 Cadillac costs just as much as a $6000 Ford and then went and bought a Cadillac at another dealership.

Not that I agree with the salesman's approach, but luxury cars do cost more to maintain than cheaper brands.

My dad discovered they drive nicer, too.

It’s not that much of a racket to say that the 2nd most expensive thing a person will likely buy in their lives outside of a home should match the personality of the buyer. I mean, cmon.
